The fifth Tom Tompkins' novel in the Thornham Serious Crime Unit series.
This is Tompkins' last appearance. He's officially retired, but still consulted from time to time by members of his old team. It's the Autumn of his life and he's slowly, but inevitably winding down. However, a newly-arrived crime boss from London threatens the stability of Thornham in several damaging ways. Tompkins feels he must go head to head with him, but he's an older man now, and his health is not great. He realises the odds are stacked heavilty against him, but he's determined to try and secure a conviction.
